Donor Protections

Donor Protections offered through National Kidney Registry centers

Those who donate through transplant centers who participate with the NKR have access to some or all of the donor support services provided by their program, Donor Shield.

Donor Protections offered through Alliance for Paired Kidney Donation centers

Those who donate through transplant centers who participate with the APKD have access to some or all of the donor support services provided by their program, Donor Protect.

Donor Protections offered through all other transplant centers (NLDAC)

Some transplant centers don’t partner with exchange programs, and therefore they do not offer the protections that are outlined above. Instead, different transplant centers may offer support services unique to that hospital. In addition, all transplant centers in the US allow donors to apply for NLDAC financial support. Please ask your transplant coordinator directly to learn more about donor protections and support resources available to you at the transplant center you’ve chosen.

Donor Protections offered through state-specific legislation

Depending on which state you live in, there may be protections available to you in the form of laws prohibiting life, disability, and long-term care insurers from cancelling or refusing insurance to living donors. Additionally, there is legislation in some states that provides for reimbursable tax credits for living donors, and some states also provide for job protected leave from public employees. These, and other legal protections, are outlined by state on the AKF Map of Living Donor Protection.
