Nutcracker Syndrome's Silver Lining
For some with a rare condition known as Nutcracker Syndrome, donating a kidney is a double victory—relieving their own painful symptoms while offering someone else a life-changing transplant.
Nutcracker Syndrome occurs when the left kidney’s vein is compressed between two arteries, like a nut in a nutcracker. This compression often leads to severe abdominal pain, blood in the urine, and other health issues.
In some cases, removing the affected kidney provides the best relief. When the kidney is healthy, it can be donated, transforming the life of a person waiting for a transplant. At NKDO, our team of experienced donor mentors has supported many Nutcracker Syndrome patients on their journey to becoming kidney donors.
In this video from the National Kidney Registry, LJ Dong shares her experience of donating a kidney at NewYork Presbyterian’s Living Donor Transplant Program. The procedure not only relieved her painful Nutcracker Syndrome symptoms but also gave another person a second chance at a healthier life and brighter future.
